Today was the end of my first academic week back at Houghton after a long and hot summer. I can’t express in words just how exciting it is to be back here and getting into the swing of things! But before I start ranting about how much excitement I’m feeling right now I think that I should introduce myself. This is my first post after all. As you may have gathered my name is Chris. As you may have not yet gathered I am a junior, so at the moment I am exactly halfway …

So it begins!

Well hey there everyone! Its really great to be back blogging for Houghton College this year! It just so happens that this is my fourth and final year here at Hogwarts….excuse me, Houghton! =) For starters, my summer was perhaps the greatest summer anyone could ask for. I worked a grand total of 10 hours per week, which, if I’m doing my math correctly, leaves me all the time in the world to do exactly what I want!  So, I did just that! I hiked, mountain biked, camped, went to amusement parks, re-read all 7 Harry Potter books in 2 months flat, spent time with my family, and still had time to watch 50 new movies! Let me tell you…that was the summer I’ve been looking for!!! I’ve …

The beginnings of an Egyptian adventure

Sunday, August 29, 2010, at 11:37 am

Hello there, blog readers!

I am excited to be writing my first post to share with all of you—all the way from Egypt, nonetheless!

Though I will admit that it is a bit strange to not be returning to campus this fall (and I certainly miss many of my friends, professors, and mentors in Houghton), I am thrilled to be spending this semester studying abroad in Egypt through CCCU’s Middle East Studies Program. We are still in the midst of an orientation week so we have not yet started classes or established a more normal routine, but our days here have been full with touring Cairo, settling into our new apartments, learning how to cross streets (and this is QUITE a crazy undertaking in Egypt!), procuring books and extended visas, …

Reflections on a long summer. . .

Wednesday, August 18, 2010, at 7:19 pm

This summer was particularly long. Not because I was bored- O no! but because I was busy, terribly busy at times. Yet, it was stuff worth being busy over.

I started out this summer with two short weeks at home resting and eating and resting. After that I began a fellowship with the Center for Behavioral Neuroscience in Atlanta, Georgia.

That was ten weeks. Ten long weeks. Was it enjoyable? At times. Was it hard? Definitely. Did it help me grow intellectually and spiritually? Yes, very much so. Travelling to a far off city to do work that is more or less completely foreign to me was a very new experience. I can look back on that period with no regrets- it was an amazing opportunity that I enjoyed very …

Hello!

Hi friends!

My name is Lia Thomassian and I am going to be blogging throughout this school year, 2010-2011 to tell you a little about my life at Houghton :) Right now, I am sitting in my dorm room at Houghton enjoying the cool August breeze. I am an RA (Resident’s Assistant) so I am here 2 weeks earlier than the rest of the students. I will be the RA on the 2nd floor of Lambein, one of the women’s dorms at Houghton. It’s so fun to be back on this beautiful campus and seeing all of my good friends from last year. We are in the process of getting ready for the new students and I am SO EXCITED!! I believe that’s it for right now, but expect …

Getting there…the end is in sight!

Sunday, April 18, 2010, at 9:05 am

Hey everyone!  Its official.  We have a week and a half left of classes and then a few days of finals before this semester is over!  I’ll be staying on through graduation because I’m an RA and have also been selected to serve as the Junior Class Marshall for the Commencement ceremonies.  But I thought I’d give you a bit of an update on what’s been happening here at school over the last few weeks!  Two weeks ago was our Easter Break and we had a full week away.  It was great…some time to relax, connect with friends from home, and get some serious work done.  But… hehehe…that also means plenty of time for watching movies, playing …

International Banquet

Thursday, April 01, 2010, at 7:50 pm

Each year, the International Students Association puts on a banquet for the college featuring delicious international food and a fashion show. You are encouraged to wear any clothing you might have from another country and to bring stories of your overseas adventures! This year, as most, African fashions dominated, but were nearly matched in number by the Indian outfits. Clothing was also featured from Estonia, Syria, Benin, Yemen, Bahrain, Thailand, and Cambodia. The food, which is the main draw, included Mexican, Italian, and Indian main dishes, along with Indian braided bread and sugared Kenyan doughnuts for dessert. The drama troupe Encore provided entertainment with their amusing skits about airport woes, and many amusing stories were shared around the tables. Spring Fling!!!

Monday, March 29, 2010, at 11:16 pm

Hey everyone! So, I’ve definitely come from one of the craziest weekends of my entire Houghton career!  This past Friday and Saturday night, Houghton College hosted the Spring Fling event for local youth groups.  The area that is pooled from goes from Watertown NY, to Troy PA; a MASSIVE group of students, chaperons and Youth Group Leaders.  We had well over 1,000 students on campus Friday night into Saturday morning.  Okay, so not to add to the mayhem that would naturally occur when that many Junior and High School students show up, but Houghton also had its Spring Bus Trip and Encounter Day on Friday as well.  To say the least, this campus was CRAZY!!!

Anyway, back to …
